The comic appeal in this movie makes it feel lighter and easier to watch while still being able to convey serious messages. The tone is set in the very beginning with a boring old narrator whose voice has no emotion. Then all of a sudden he is interrupted by five woman who are full of enthusiasm. They begin to sing and give Hercules' background in a comedic style that is much easier for the audience to get involved with. Keeping in mind that their target audience was children, the film makers realized that a dull narrator would not keep their attention, but a much more up beat narration would be more fun for the audience and get the same message across. There are multiple other instances where comic appeal is used to maintain the involvement and attention of the audience while not losing any effectiveness of the message. For example, the movie's use of Hades' minions Pain and Panic is especially impressive. These characters are necessary for the plot to make sense, but at the same time they provide slapstick antics that children would love. Without their failure to take care of Hercules as a baby, he is able to grow up and eventually help the gods defeat Hades and the Titans. Throughout all of their missions as well, they continuously fail while bouncing around and hurting each other to provoke a good laugh. Next, is the film's brilliant use of the character Phil, Hercules' trainer. He is a crucial character to the story, because he allows Hercules to unlock his full potential. At the same time, Phil is a very dry and sarcastic character that can entertain the audience with his comments. The most impressive part of Phil's character is that he comes across as a tough trainer that does not take it easy on Hercules and really makes him work. All the while, he maintains his comic edge. All of these characters are multi-dimensional which is important for a movie like this to make the audience entertained while not sacrificing any of the plot or messages being conveyed. This film accomplishes this feat flawlessly and that is why it is such an outstanding film.
